What Makes a College a Great Fit for Me?
When researching colleges, be sure to ask yourself these questions to determine if you should include this college on your list.
• Do I get a really good “feeling” when I visit the campus? It’s impossible to describe, but most students know it’s the right school for them.
• Practical Details: Is the school the right size, in the right location, offering the majors and/or minors I am considering?
• Do I agree with the school’s academic approach? Research the courses offered within and outside of your intended major. Check out average class sizes, the academic calendar, and graduation requirements.
• Are the students who attend similar to me? Look at student diversity (including gender, race, religion, geography), social life opportunities, including sports teams to cheer for, venues if you like to participate in the performing arts, museums to visit, indoor and outdoor recreational areas, dining options. Reading the school newspaper will give you great insight into the vibe of the school.
• Is this school affordable? Investigate merit and need-based financial aid options.
• Remember, it’s comfortable to be a little uncomfortable in a new environment, so embrace the challenge of doing a deep dive into each school you’re thinking of applying to. Better research now = fewer surprises later on.
